Gas cylinder leakage suffocates hundreds in Sudan’s capital

May 18, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – More than 200 citizens in the Sudanese capital Khartoum have suffered from suffocation as a result of a leakage of gas cylinder.

The incident took place on Friday in Al-Malaga area in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city.

According to the chief of police investigation department in Khartoum State, Lt-Gen Abdel-Rahman al-Nurabi, the leakage was caused when a homeless guy removed the cylinder’s needle valve in order to sell it.

He pointed out that the leakage had led to the suffocation of 202 citizens but without any death case. He further added that all those affected were hospitalized and later released except four whose health condition was now stabilizing.

The police official also said that the site of the incident is currently surrounded by fire-fighting forces.

So said presidents Carter and Reagan, but that was before 1996, when the US Congress voted to allow federal agencies to offset portions of Social Security payments to collect debts owed to

those agencies. (31 USC ง3716). Now we read of horror stories like this:

    I'm a 68-year-old grandma of 2 young grandchildren. I went to college to upgrade my employment status in 1998 or 1999. I finished in 2000 and at that time had a student loan balance of about 3,500.00.

    Could not find a job and had to request forbearance to carry me. Over the years I forgot about the loan, dealt with poor health, had brain surgery in 2006 and the collection agents decided to collect for the loan in 2008.

    At no time during the 6-7 year gap did anyone remind me or let me know that I could make a minimum payment on the loan. Now that I am on Social Security (have been since I was 62), they have decided to garnishee my SS check to the tune of 15%.

    I have not been employed since 2004 and have the two dependents ... I don't dispute that I owed them the $3,500.00 but am wondering why they let it build up to somewhere around $17,000/20,000 before they attempted to collect.

Her debt went from $3,500 to over $17,000 in 10 years! How could that be?

It seems that congress has removed nearly every consumer protection from student loans, including not only standard bankruptcy protections, statutes of limitations, and truth in lending requirements, but protection from usury (excessive interest).

Lenders can vary the interest rates, and some borrowers are reporting rates as high as 18-20%. At 20%, debt doubles in just three-and-a-half years; and in seven years, it quadruples. Congress has also given lenders draconian collection powers to extort not just the original principal and interest on student loans but huge sums in penalties, fees, and collection costs.

The majority of these debts are being imposed on young people, who have a potential 40 years of gainful employment ahead of them to pay the debt off. But a sizeable chunk of US student loan debt is held by senior citizens, many of whom are not only unemployed but unemployable.

According to the New York Federal Reserve, 2 million US seniors aged 60 and over have student loan debt, on which they owe a collective $36.5 billion; and 11.2% of this debt is in default. Almost a third of all student loan debt is held by people aged 40 and over, and 4.2% is held by people over the age of 60. The total student debt is now over $1 trillion, more even than credit card debt. The sum is unsustainable and threatens to be the next debt tsunami.

Some of this debt is for loans taken out years earlier on their own schooling, and some is from co-signing student loans for children or grandchildren. But much of it has been incurred by middle-aged people going back to school in the hope of finding employment in a bad job market. What they have wound up with is something much worse: no job, an exponentially mounting debt that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, and the prospect of old age without a social security check adequate to survive on.

Gone is the promise of earlier presidents of a "commitment to the belief that workers should not live in dread that a disability, death, or old age could leave them or their families destitute". The plight of the indebted elderly is reminiscent of the Irish immigrants who came to America after a potato famine in the 19th century, who were looked upon in some places as actually lower than slaves. Plantation owners kept their slaves fed, clothed and cared for because they were valuable property. The Irish were expendable, and they were on their own.

It is obviously not a good time to raise interest rates on student debt, but they are set to double on July 1, to 6.8%. Many lawmakers in both parties agree that the current 3.4% rates should be extended for another year, but they can't agree on how to find the $6 billion that this would cost. Republicans want to take the money from a healthcare fund that promotes preventive care; Democrats want to eliminate some tax benefits for small business owners.

Congress cannot agree on $6 billion to save the students, yet they managed to agree in a matter of days in September 2008 to come up with $700 billion to save the banks; and the Federal Reserve found many trillions more. Estimates are that tuition could be provided free to students for a mere $30 billion annually. The government has the power to find $30 billion - or $300 billion or $3 trillion - in the same place the Federal Reserve found it: it can simply issue the money.

Congress is empowered by the Constitution to "coin money" and "regulate the value thereof", and no limit is set on the face amount of the coins it creates. It could issue a few one-billion dollar coins, deposit them in an account, and start writing checks.

But wouldn't that be inflationary? No. The Fed's own figures show that the money supply (M3) has shrunk by $3 trillion since 2008. That sum could be added back into the economy without inflating prices. Gas and food are going up today, but the whole range of prices must be considered in order to determine whether price inflation is occurring. Housing and wages are significantly larger components of the price structure than commodities, and they remain severely depressed.

There is another way the government could find needed funds without raising taxes, slashing services, or going further into debt: congress could re-finance the federal debt through the Federal Reserve, interest-free.

Canada did this from 1939 to 1974, keeping its national debt low and sustainable while funding massive programs including seaways, roadways, pensions, and national health care. The national debt shot up only when the government switched from borrowing from its own central bank to borrowing from private lenders at interest. The rationale was that borrowing bank-created money from the government's own central bank inflated the money supply, while borrowing existing funds from private banks did not. But even the Federal Reserve acknowledges that private banks create the money they lend on their books, just as central banks do.

United States taxpayers now pay nearly half a trillion dollars annually to finance our federal debt. The cumulative figure comes to $8.2 trillion paid in interest just in the past 24 years. By financing the debt itself rather than paying interest to private parties, the government could divert what it would have paid in interest into tuition, jobs, infrastructure and social services, allowing us to keep the social contract while at the same time stimulating the economy.

For students, at the very least the bankruptcy option needs to be reinstated, usury laws restored, predatory practices eliminated, and the cost of education brought back down to earth. One possibility for relieving the burden on students would be to give them interest-free loans.

The government of New Zealand now offers zero-percent loans to New Zealand students, with repayment to be made from their income after they graduate. For the past 20 years, the Australian government has also successfully funded students by giving out what are in effect interest-free loans. The loans in the Australian Higher Education Loan Programme (or HELP) do not bear interest, but the government gets back more than it lends because the principal is indexed to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which goes up every year.

Predatory lenders are keeping us in debt peonage through misguided economics and bank-captured legislators. We have people who desperately want to work, to the point of going back to school to try to improve their chances; and we have mountains of work that needs to be done.

The only thing keeping them apart is that artificial constraint called "money", which we have allowed to be created by banks and let out at interest when it could have been created by public institutions for public purposes, either by direct issuance or through publicly-owned banks. We just need to recognize our oppressors and throw off their yoke, and the good times can roll again.

Dieva vēstnesis Muhammads bija laipnākais no cilvēkiem, lai gan viņš pārspēja citus arī drošsirdīgumā un bezbailībā. Esot ar ārkārtīgi maigu sirdi, viņa acis saplūda asarās redzot mazāko nežēlību. Viņa skolnieks Šaddāds ibn Auss atstāstīja, ka Dieva vēstnesis teica: “Patiesi, Dievs ir noteicis darīšanu labākajā iespējamajā veidā (ihsān) visās lietās. Tādēļ, ja jums ir jānogalina, nogaliniet labi, un ja jums ir jānokauj, tad nokaujiet labi. Lai katrs no jums uzasina nazi un nomierina upuri.” Ibn Abbāss atstāstīja, ka kāds vīrs nospieda kazu pie zemes kaušanai un tad sāka asināt nazi. Vēstnesis Muhammads (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) to redzot teica: “Vai to taisiet to nokaut divreiz? Kāpēc tu neuzasināji nazi pirms nospiest to uz zemes?”

Žēlastība ticīgajiem

Vēstneša līdzjūtība pret ticīgajiem bija pārākajā pakāpē. Dievs Kurānā apraksta viņa līdzjūtību šādi: “Nudien nāca pie jums sūtnis no jums pašiem. Tas, ka jūs ciešat, viņam ir liela lieta, viņš ir nobažījies par jums, pret ticīgajiem viņš ir maigs un žēlsirdīgs.” [9:128]

Reiz saslima Sads ibn Ubāda un tāpēc Dieva vēstnesis viņu apciemoja. Redzot uzticīgo skolnieku šādā nožēlojamā stāvoklī, viņam sariesās asaras acīs. Tad viņš teica: „Dievs nesoda asaru dēļ, un arī ne skumju un bēdāšanās dēļ, bet Viņš soda šīs dēļ.” Un vēstnesis norādīja uz savu mēli. [Bukhārī]

Žēlastība saviem ienaidniekiem

Badra kaujā sagūstītie karagūstekņi bija no viņa sīvākajiem ienaidniekiem. Neskatoties uz to, viņiem tika dota labākā aprūpe. Starp karagūstekņiem bija arī Suheils ibn Amrs, kurš daudz uzstājās ar runām pret Dieva vēstnesi un nosodīja un apsūdzēja Dieva vēstnesi. Viens no vēstneša tuvākajiem skolniekiem Umars ibn Al-Khatābs ieteica, ka vajadzētu izraut šim apmelojošam oratoram divus priekšējos apakšzobus, jo tad viņš nevarētu skaidri izsacīties un nespētu uzstāties ar dedzīgām runām pret Dieva vēstnesi. Muhammads (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) atbildēja: „Ja es to izdarītu, tad Dievs arī mani šādi sakropļotu Tiesas dienā, lai gan es esmu Viņa vēstnesis.”

Muhammada (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) dzimtās Mekas ļaudis lielākoties sākotnēji noraidīja Islāmu un visādi vērsās pret vēstnesi un ticīgajiem. Pēc daudzu gadu ciešanām ticīgie aizbēga prom uz Meku, bet tad nākamos piecus gadus pagāni mēģināja iekarot Medīnu un apkaut Dieva vēstnesi un ticīgos. Galu galā, pagāni noslēdza ar ticīgajiem ārēji it kā ticīgajiem neizdevīgu pamiera līgumu. Tomēr iestājoties pamieram Islāma vēsts strauji izplatījās. Tāpēc kad pēc diviem pamiera gadiem pagāni pārkāpa pamiera līgumu, tad Muhammads (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) sapulcināja desmit tūkstošu ticīgo armiju un redzot šādu pārspēku Mekas pagāni padevās bez kaujas. Pēc divdesmit viena gada ilgas sludināšanas Muhammads (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) atgriezās Mekā kā uzvarētājs. Viņš jautāja pagāniem, kuri divdesmit vienu gadu bija vajājuši, spīdzinājuši un nogalinājuši ticīgos: „Ko jūs sagaidāt, lai es ar jums darītu?” Viņi atbildēja: „Tu esi cēlsirdīgs cēlsirdīgā dēls.” Viņš paziņoja savu lēmumu: „Jūs esat brīvi. ka Mekas iedzīvotāji padevās bez kaujas. Nebūs atmaksas šajā dienā un lai Dievs piedod jums.”

Žēlastība sievietēm

Dieva vēstnesis bija arī ļoti laipns un līdzjūtīgs pret sievietēm. Pirmsislāma pagāni lielākoties attiecās pret sievietēm briesmīgi. Cēlais vēstnesis deva tām godu un cieņu tāpat kā vīriešiem. Umars teica: „Mēs neko daudz nerūpējāmies par sievietēm un nevērtējām tās augstu būdami (pagānu) Mekā, bet pret viņām daudz labāk attiecās (ticīgo) Medīnā. Dieva vēstnesis iedibināja sieviešu tiesības ar sevis sacīto un pavēlēto, un tas uzlaboja viņu situāciju un statusu.”

Žēlastība bērniem

Dieva vēstnesis bija īpaši līdzjūtīgs pret bērniem. Ja viņš redzēja bērnu raudot, viņš apsēdās viņam vai viņai blakus un jautāja par bēdu iemeslu un mierināja viņu. Viņš arī juta mātes sāpes par bērnu vairāk kā pati māte. Reiz viņš teica: „Es stāvu lūgšanā (kā lūgšanas vadītājs grupas lūgšanā) un vēlos lūgšanu paildzināt. Tomēr, es dzirdu bērna raudas un saīsinu lūgšanu mātes bažu dēļ.” [Bukhārī]

Viņš mēdza ņemt bērnus savās rokās un apskaut tos. Reiz viņš apskāva savus mīļotos mazdēlus Hasanu un Huseinu. To redzot Akra ibn Hābiss teica: „Man ir desmit bērni. Bet līdz šim es neesmu skūpstījis nevienu no tiem.” Dieva vēstnesis atbildēja: „Tas, kuram nav žēlastība pret citiem, netiks žēlots (Tiesas dienā).” [Bukhārī un Muslim]

Žēlastība vergiem

Dieva vēstnesis stingri pavēlēja laipnu un dāsnu izturēšanos pret vergiem, kalpiem un strādniekiem. Džābirs atstāstīja, ka Dieva vēstnesis teica: „Baro viņus ar tādu pašu ēdienu kā tavējais, apģērb ar tādām pašām drēbēm kādas tu valkā, un netaisi problēmas Dieva radībām.”

Citviet viņš teica: „Tie, kurus Dievs ir padarījis no jums atkarīgus, tie ir jūsu brāļi, kalpi un palīgi. Šādam, kura brālis ir padarīts par kalpotāju, ir pienākums barot viņu ar ēdienu, kuru viņš pats ēd. Un apģērbt ar drēbēm kādas viņš pats valkā. Un nepavēliet viņam pāri viņa spējām. Un, ja tas kļūst vajadzīgs, tad palīdziet viņam darot to darbu.

Žēlastība dzīvniekiem

Dieva vēstneša žēlastība nebija tikai cilvēkiem, bet arī dzīvniekiem.

Vēstnesis aizliedza ticīgajiem turēt šīs neinteliģentās radības izsalkumā vai slāpēs, kā arī pārbiedēt vai pārslogot tos. Viņš norādīja, ka laipnība un laba izturēšanās pret tiem ir Dieva atalgoti darbi, kuri tuvina Dievam. Abū Hureira atstāstīja, ka Dieva vēstnesis teica: „Ceļotājs bija izslāpis un ieraudzīja aku. Viņš nolaidās lejā akā un dzēra. Kad viņš izrāpās ārā, tad viņš redzēja tik izslāpušu suni, ka tas laizīja dubļus. Vīrs aptvēra, ka suns ir tikpat izslāpis kā viņš tikko bija. Tāpēc viņš nolaidās akā vēlreiz, piepildīja savu ādas zābaku ar ūdeni un uznesa to augšā savos zobos. Tad viņš deva no tā padzerties sunim. Dievs bija apmierināts ar šo žēlastības darbu un piedeva šim vīram viņa grēkus.” Vēstneša skolnieki jautāja: „Dieva vēstnesi, vai tad ir atmaksa par darbiem pret mājdzīvniekiem un savvaļas zvēriem?” Muhammads (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) atbildēja: „Ir atmaksa par katru radību ar dzīvu sirdi.”

Abdullāhs ibn Umars atstāstīja, ka Dieva vēstnesis teica: „Kāda sieviete tiks iemesta Ellē tikai tāpēc, ka viņa nedeva ēdienu un ūdeni iespundētam kaķim un neatbrīvoja to, lai kaķis pats apmierinātu savu izsalkumu ķerot un ēdot zemes rāpuļus (vaboles, tārpus utt.).”

Reiz atgriežoties no militārās kampaņas, daži Muhammada (lai viņam Dieva svētība un miers) skolnieki paņēma putnēnus no kādas ligzdas, kuru bija ieraudzījuši. Putnēnu māte atgriežoties uz ligzdu atrada to tukšu un sāka lidot apkārt tos meklēdama un spalgi kliegt. Uzzinājis notikušo Dieva vēstnesis kļuva dusmīgs un pavēlēja nolikt putnēnus atpakaļ ligzdā. [Abū Dāūd]

Nobeigums

Dieva vēstneša mīlestība un līdzjūtība bija visām radībām un tā bija citāda kādu šodien sludina mūsdienu „humānisti”. Viņš bija patiess un sabalansēts savā mīlestībā un līdzjūtībā. Viņš bija vairāk patiesi līdzjūtīgs kā jebkurš cits cilvēks. Viņš bija Dieva vēstnesis – cilvēks, kurš ir Dieva izvēlēts, lai sauktu uz vadību no Dieva visas apzinīgās būtnes, - gan cilvēkus, gan džinus. Dieva vēstnesis šo zemes dzīvi neredzēja cita iemesla dēļ, bet lai citus vilktu prom no Elles Uguns uz kuru cilvēki skrien un raujas kā naktstauriņi pie ugunskura. Viņš nedzīvoja šo dzīvi sev, bet gan citiem.

„Patiesi, tajā (Kurānā) ir vēstījums (Dievu) pielūdzošiem ļaudīm.

Un Es nesūtīju tevi (Muhammad), kā vien par žēlastību pasaulēm.

Saki (Muhammad): „Man tikvien tiek iedvests tas, ka jūsu pielūdzamais ir tikai viens pielūdzamais (Dievs). Nu, vai būsiet muslimi (padevušies)?”” [21:106-108]

If a person for whom Jumu’ah is obligatory does not attend and does not have a valid excuse, this is a major sin. Whoever does not attend three Jumu’ahs (in a row) out of negligence has a seal placed over his heart and is regarded as one of the ghaafileen (negligent, heedless). Muslim narrated in his Saheeh from Abu Hurayrah and Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both), that they heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them) say from his minbar: “People should definitely stop neglecting Jumu’ah, or else Allaah will most certainly seal their hearts and they will most certainly be among the ghaafileen.”

According to another hadeeth: “Whoever neglects three jumu’ahs (in a row) out of negligence will have a seal placed upon his heart.” This is a spiritual punishment, which is more severe that a physical punishment such as imprisonment or flogging. The Muslim ruler should punish those who fail to attend Jumu’ah prayers with no excuse, as a deterrent. Let each Muslim fear Allaah and not miss performing one of the obligatory duties enjoined by Him, lest he expose himself to the punishment of Allaah; let him adhere to that which Allaah has made obligatory so that he may earn the reward of Allaah. And Allaah bestows His Bounty upon whomsoever He wills.

If the husband has died and the woman wants to marry someone who is religiously committed and of good character, the guardian is obliged to arrange that marriage, whether the guardian is her father or her son, if the father is not there. And it is not permissible for anyone to prevent her, because this is one of her rights. It makes no difference whether the woman is old or young, or whether she has children or not.

The fact that the woman is old is not a barrier to her getting married, because there are many benefits in marriage, such as the woman’s need for someone to look after her affairs, take care of her, and keep her company in her house, instead of her living alone in her house with no company.

What you have to do is ask about this man who has proposed to your mother; if he is good in terms of religious commitment and character, then you have to arrange the marriage and it is not permissible for you to refuse to do so.
